The purpose of SCDWiki is to make it easier for people to be successful in implementing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. The first year is the hardest. So much seems new. So much seems strange. There are no “days off” from the diet. When one is not feeling well, it is hard to consider trying something different and believe that it will work. We veterans know how you feel. We have been there.
The SCDWiki is devoted to assisting beginners to find digestive wellness and healing with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD or SCDiet) as delineated in the paperback book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, B.A., M.Sc. SCD has been used successfully by thousands of people to help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, even into remission.
Breaking the Vicious Cycle is about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, its history, and the scientific principles that it is based on, with many helpful recipes. What the book lacks is "how to" techniques on living one’s life while on SCD. SCDWiki demonstrates how to maintain SCD: working in an office, traveling, doing sports, attending family events, attending a business conference, etc. It is the purpose of SCDWiki to try to fill the technique gap, and to be a quick start guide for living a full life while on SCD. SCDWiki focuses on helping beginners through their first year and includes tips from SCD veterans on how to overcome any problems that may arise.
It is essential that anyone embarking on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) have access to a copy of Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, B.A., M.Sc. (BTVC). If you are unable to purchase a copy, see if your public library can obtain a copy for you. It is the authentic, official book of the SCD diet. The official website for the book is "www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info" has a wealth of information, including a detailed list of allowable foods. The book is available on Amazon.
The writers on SCDWiki have no financial interest in the BTVC book nor are we members of the Gottschall family. We are all persons with digestive diseases who, through using SCD, have gotten our lives back. We are so grateful for this diet that we wanted to share what we know about techniques for integrating SCD into one's daily life. In addition to our own experiences, we have summarized the collective experiences of others who generously shared their stories on the former Yahoo health group forum, BTVC-SCD. This wiki is dedicated to all who are on SCD.
You will feel better on the gut friendly Specific Carbohydrate Diet. SCD is not a weight loss diet. Quantities are not limited. There are no point systems or calorie counts. Some lose, some gain. Just follow the diet, eat until you are satisfied and learn to listen to your own digestive system. The SCD has a way of "right sizing you" over the long term.
The SCD is complementary with your traditional medical treatments. Continue to take all prescribed medicines while you are healing. The small and large intestine combined are 30 feet long, so digestive healing takes time, lots of time. SCD takes patience; however, on SCD, most of us started to feel better very soon and those awful symptoms: the gas, the bloating, the pain, the dashing to the bathroom were soon markedly reduced or eliminated.
The most important thing to remember is that you are unique. Your healing process is solely driven by your own body. Some heal faster than others, some can tolerate some foods that others cannot. So what! You must go at your own pace.. Slow and steady will be the fastest route to your healing in the long run.
How to Use this Wiki
You are welcome to jump right into the SCDWiki, looking for the topics you need. Since the focus of SCDWiki is on successful techniques while on SCD, it is important to read Breaking the Vicious Cycle and/or the official website first or in conjunction with using the SCDWiki. The Topics Section will guide you to topics of interest.
Most people soon feel better on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. How much time it takes depends entirely on each individual person. Within the SCD framework, each individual must adapt the diet to the needs of his or her own body. The SCDWiki can help you get there.
Terminology
Breaking the Vicious Cycle uses the terms "legal" and "illegal" to indicate that foods are allowed or not allowed on the diet. To minimize confusion on the internet with regard to readers for whom English is a second language, on this wiki, we will use the terms "allowed" or "permitted" or "permissible" if a food is okay on SCD. We will use "not allowed" or "not permitted" or "not permissible" for a food that must be avoided on SCD.
