The authors and editors of SCDwiki.com are a group of volunteers who follow and believe in the healing ability of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) as delineated in the book, Breaking The Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. While we hope that everyone using this wiki will have a copy of this book available to them, we have no financial interest in the sale of the book. Breaking The Vicious Cycle is owned by the Gottschall family.
The authors and editors of SCDwiki.com are from different parts of the United States, Canada and overseas.
Most of us have never met face to face as we know each other on-line through the list serve http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD. None of us are medical doctors, nurses or credentialed dieticians or nutritionists. What we have in common is that we all have or had serious digestive disorders and were saved by following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Some have many years of experience on SCD. Some are relative newcomers. Some did not find SCD for many years and in their search for relief have done extensive reading in nutrition and related areas. In summary, the group has a great deal of knowledge gained by their experience.
We share with all the other beneficial diets the core belief, demonstrated to us in case after case everyday, that diet matters. What we eat is a significant factor, probably the primary factor in our overall health and, in particular, the state of our digestive system. Where we part company from other seemingly similar and beneficial diets such as GAPS, FODMAPS, Paleo, anti-inflammatory diets, etc. is two fold. Many of the above diets stress using organic foods. Elaine Gottschall wanted this important healing diet to be used by as many persons as possible. She knew that the SCDiet would work perfectly well without organic foods. She specifically avoided specifying organic foods because she knew that they were inaccessible to in some locations and at present, organic food is more expensive. She did not want anyone to believe that organic food was necessary for the SCDiet.
Secondly, while the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is beneficial for everyone as it is basically eating nutritious, easy to digest foods, SCD was specifically designed to assist those with acute digestive disorders. The diet was developed by a doctor and researched by a bio-chemist for the purpose of achieving remission and healing of digestive disorders. There is a scientific basis for the foods selected and the foods not permitted.
While some individual persons may tolerate particular foods that are outside of the SCD menu, many cannot. In SCD, we insist on strict adherence to SCD as written by Elaine Gottschall not to be fussy or compulsive, but to protect the needs of the most sensitive sufferer. SCD is focused on digestive disorders, many of which are auto-immune diseases where a seemingly small event can cause a big reaction. We know that the SCDiet works and do not believe that the SCDiet should be modified. It is not a diet to try to lose weight; however, some have lost weight while on the SCDiet.
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is an integral component of patient healing. SCD is not a substitute from professional medical care. All prescription medicines should be taken as directed. While trying to keep SCD impermissible ingredients to a minimum, Elaine advised that it may be necessary to tolerate some impermissible, inactive ingredients in medications and supplements.
Our expertise is that we have a lot of experience using SCD, and going through life's normal activities while on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. This wiki includes summarizing the most informative posts from persons on SCD who are part of the three thousand or more member list serve http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD. This wiki tries to assemble, in one convenient place, the best that we know about living with SCD.
Our mission is to give forward in gratitude for those who helped us, to assist those suffering from digestive disorders, and to facilitate mastering the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.
The writers on SCDWiki.com have no financial interest in the BTVC book nor are we members of the Gottschall family. We are all persons with digestive diseases who through using SCD have gotten our lives back. We are so grateful for this diet that we want to share what we know about techniques for integrating SCD into one's daily life. In addition to our own experiences, we have summarized the collective experiences of others who have generously shared their stories on the Yahoo forum, http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD. This wiki is dedicated to all who are on SCD.
We want to make it easier for persons to implement the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and be successful. We know that the first year is the hardest. So much seems new. So much seems strange. When one is not feeling well, it is hard to consider trying something different. We know how you feel. We have been there.
You will feel better on the gut friendly Specific Carbohydrate Diet. SCD is not a weight loss diet. Quantities are not limited. There are no point systems or calorie counts. Some lose, some gain. Just follow the diet, eat until you are satisfied and learn to listen to your own digestive system. The SCD has a way of "right sizing you" over the long term.
The SCD is complementary with your traditional medical treatments. Continue to take all prescribed medicines while you are healing. The small and large intestine combined are 30 feet long so digestive healing takes time, lots of time. However, on SCD, most of us started to feel better very soon and those awful symptoms: the gas, the bloating, the pain, the dashing to the bathroom were soon markedly reduced or eliminated.
The purpose of the SCDWiki is to provide support and encouragement for those who are either starting or already on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. We hope that the content of SCDWiki.com will ease digestive suffering, increase public awareness and educate medical professionals about the power of the SCD diet as a complementary treatment.
Our collective experience has shown that the SCD diet makes a substantial, positive difference in the treatment of digestive disorders. We know of many persons who got their lives back using SCD in conjunction with professional medical treatment.
SCD can reduce and, in time, completely eliminate the terrible, life ruining symptoms of digestive disorders. Followers of SCD can and do lead a normal life. Topics include our experiences with overcoming challenges such as: travel, eating out, athletics, and hospital stays. These "how to" subjects are not addressed in the ''Breaking the Vicious Cycle'' book (BTVC).
The purpose of this site is to assist persons in implementing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet as delineated in the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, B.A., M.Sc. It is not intended to be medical advice nor is it a substitute for consulting medical professionals.
